In April, carriers paid CZK 1.543 billion in tolls, the CO2 emission charge exceeded CZK 233 million

Prague, 22 May 2024 – Toll collection from vehicles weighing over 3.5 tonnes increased by 34% year-on-year in April. The reason for the unusually high increase is not only the new CO2 emission charge, but also the 3 extra working days compared to April 2023. The new charge accounted for 15% of the total collection of CZK 1.543 billion.

“Despite the high increase in toll collection, nothing unusual is happening on Czech roads and motorways. While in March the carriers had three working days less to transport goods year-on-year due to the Easter holidays and weekends, in April, on the contrary, there were three working days extra. As a result, the transports and the related toll collection thus largely shifted between these two months,” explained Petr Chvátal, the CEO of CzechToll.

Throughout April, the satellite toll system processed more than 103 million toll transactions. Again, the year-on-year increase of 18% is influenced by the number of working days and a slight increase in the number of toll sections.

As of 1 March 2024, tolls in the Czech Republic have four components. The road use charge accounts for the largest part of the total collection (80.15%), followed by the new external cost charge for CO2 emissions (15.12%), the external cost charge for traffic-based air pollution (3.61%) and the external cost charge for traffic-based noise pollution (1.12%).

In the first four months of this year CzechToll collected CZK 5.556 billion for the State Fund for Transport Infrastructure using the satellite toll system. In a year-on-year comparison, the amount of toll collection has increased by 14.5% since the beginning of the year.

At the end of April 848 thousand vehicles weighing over 3.5 tons were registered in the electronic toll system, of which 669 thousand vehicles had foreign license plate numbers. For these registered vehicles, CzechToll issued 652 thousand on-board units to carriers.
